The Moden Fuel Series
Clean Thermal Energy

  • Energetic

  • Easy to Produce

  • Low Cost - Nontoxic

  • Clean Superheated Steam

  • Zero Oxygen Environments

Description

Moden Fuel is an energetic monopropellant series first invented by James R. Moden in anticipation of future needs for a clean, safe, energy source for operations within zero-oxygen conditions, such as in undersea or outer space environments. Through extensive testing, Moden Fuel is a mature, fully developed monopropellant that has met or exceeded all expectations set forth in test parameters from various entities including the Office of Naval Research for potential use in torpedos and undersea vehicles.

Its inherent safety characteristics were demonstrated through rigorous UN Hazard Materials Classification Tests. With complete combustion, Moden Fuel produces superheated steam as a clean working fluid (expanding gasses) to propel a variety of existing engines with exhaust byproducts being mostly water and a small amount of CO2 .

As his 64 years as a Professional Engineer progressed, Jim's fascination with Engineering grew into interdisciplinary expertise as a highly decorated and renowned Materials Scientist and Propulsion Expert for the US Navy. Throughout his careers he moved from Bench Scientist to Project Engineer, Plant Manager,  Inventor, Branch Head, and Consultant.  His efforts during retirement led him back to his favorite "Hands-on Bench Science" when he developed his latest invention that he dubbed  "The Moden Fuel Series".

ON THE PERSONAL SIDE

Jim Moden was known as a dedicated and generous Husband, Father, Employee, Coworker, Friend and Mentor. With a fascination for the marvels and chemistry of Life, Jim recognized his interest in engineering from the early age of 16.  As capable as he was in research, as a mentor, Project Engineer and Branch Head, his primary passion was for "hands on science in the Lab".

At the age of 23 he received his Bachelor's of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Wayne State University, where he also earned his Master's Degree at age 30 and later was inducted into the College of Engineering Hall of Fame.

Company History

JAMES R MODEN INCORPORATED

James R. Moden (Jim) founded his Corporation in 1993 just after his retirement from his 23 years at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport RI. During this career, he worked in electrochemical energy conversion and respectfully earned international recognition as a high energy battery and propulsion expert. He was also a highly respected and decorated Civil Servant of the US Navy.

MATERIALS SCIENTIST

CHEMICAL/MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Although his career was primarily in chemical engineering and materials science, he was also an exceptional mechanical engineer, research scientist and inventor with 17 US Patents.

In his retirement, James R Moden (Inc) continued his work as a chemical engineer and materials scientist, consultant and inventor. The Moden Fuel ides was conceived in his mind long before its realization in the mid 1990s. There is still a need for industry or defense system applications which is what Jim was in the midsts doing when he was stricken by a terminal illness in early 2015.

The Invention of The Moden Fuel Series

This invention that Jim dubbed “Moden Fuel,  started as a simple idea in anticipation of future needs for a clean, safe, energetic monopropellant for operations within zero-oxygen environments as with US Navy Torpedos and Manned or Unmanned Undersea Vehicles. Although this concept was in his mind for several years, Jim Moden conceived the exact series of formula during his retirement and  from his home office in Rhode Island.  After early stages of development through small lab testing, James R Moden Inc was able to respond to a Small Business Solicitation from The Office of Naval Research.

In ongoing research Moden Fuel 1 (MF1), the least energetic in the series,  was extensively tested in private labs, and through contracts with The Office of Naval Research at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport RI where it met or exceeded every test requirement set forth in Phase I and Phase II contracts for Development, Safety, Energetics with both Combustion and Engine testing.

Moden Fuel X (MFX), the most energetic in the series was also extensively tested with complete success in private labs, and through contracts with Raytheon, Cyclone Power,  and TIAX Corporations.

Jim Designed several combustion chambers that improved the combustion efficiency of his fuel, some of which were used to interface with the Cyclone MkV engine in contract with Raytheon when again Moden Fuel Performed exactly as designed.  Affordable and viable systems of different types have been tested and proven for feasibility. Within the highly effective  performance of the Moden Fuel Series, there is still a need for industry or defense applications. Jim Moden was in the midsts of testing complete systems that were assembled with a modified engine, interfaced with one of his combustion chamber designs when he was stricken by a terminal illness in 2015 halting systems  applications.
